[song: Red Wine by Phoneboy]
AHHHH ok so my favorite band, Phoneboy, just dropped a new album [Heartbreak Designer], and oh my GOD its so GOOD ive been listening to to it nonstop since thursday night… it technically came out friday, but i stayed up late lol
i first found out about this band in late 2023, when one of their songs [Nevermind] came on autoplay and i was like “huh this bridge slaps. I wonder what else they have” and BOY was that the best decision of my life. I essentially fell down the rabbit hole, going through both of the albums they had put out at the time, and i found myself really liking every song- especially Roses, because i associated with a fictional character lol [tim stoker. tma fans you have to listen to this song it makes me insane about tim and sasha the mental pmv is so STRONG]
anyways. What I really like about them is that all of their songs have the sort of coming-of-age movie vibe, and a lot of them are really upbeat and just really fun. Even the ones that aren’t upbeat are addicting, and i’ve fixated on pretty much all their songs at least once. They’ve also got that vibe of songs that you can sing along to enthusiastically, or overdramatically teenage-angstily, or genuinely teenage-angstily- no matter the mood, it fits perfectly and slaps while doing so. Especially in the latest album!!
This was also around the time that I first got into concerts, and i learned that literally a couple months before i got into them, they toured with the happy fits in my area… and i didnt know either of those bands at that point……… actually HEARTBREAKING [hehe heartbreaking. heartbreak designer.]
but!! all hope was not lost!! after googling ''phoneboy tour'’ every week for like a year, i found… that they were touring… in my state…… miles and miles away from me… as the opening band… and it’s standing floor, so it would be my first ever standing floor concert…
so OBVIOUSLY i went.
and MAN i gotta say. Out of the three concerts I’ve been to, that one was the best one yet. I didn’t expect that I would be really into concerts given the fact that i’m in general a very frail person [and am on pots medication for something that may or may not be pots] but i was actually the one that lasted the longest out of my friends, LMAO. i was really nervous at first because basically everyone was taller than me and it was really stuffy, but after dumping all my bracelets on my friend Jacko [sorry girl,, i dont have pockets,,] and hearing the opening to Hey, Kid, i completely forgot about it for the hype. It was everything i had hoped for and more- I knew every word to every song, and I was just a ball of adrenaline the whole time. At one point i was worried i would like maybe actually pass out from excitement, but like, i was fine, so i will not change my concert behavior ever. surely this will not backfire.
after a thrilling and exhausting… Thirty Five Minutes… their set was done and the main band took the stage. But before that was intermission, and two of the band members were actually at the merch table!! I got a sweater that they took off the online merch store not too long before the concert, which was great because I loved the design and was sad it was unavailable, and I got to take a photo with them!! I also got a free sticker of the new [at the time unreleased] album’s cover, which is now on my [still yet-to-be-learned] bass guitar.
the main band was also really good, although I barely really knew them, lol. There were a lot of really fun call-and-response parts, and the music in general was upbeat and fun. At one point i think they had a bubble maker?? sick
so now the new album’s out, and they’re touring for it, and i am SO hyped. like. These songs are INCREDIBLE and i get to hear them live??? ill explode, the pure neurodivergency will be too much for me,,
anyways if you wanna get into them [you should] [theyre great] my starting recs are Nevermind, Hey Kid, What a Coward, Runaway, Something on my Mind, and Red Wine [playing rn]. if you do end up listening to them, or you have any tips for not blowing your voice out at concerts, id love if you signed my guestbook to let me know!!
